A Guide to Collecting Your New Wedding Gown

For the majority of new brides, the wedding dress is probably the most important purchase you will make for what should be one of the happiest days of your life. To avoid last minute problems and disappointments follow this simple advice when ordering and colllecting your dress:

1. After the excitement of choosing your dream gown please ensure that you obtain a written invoice or receipt for any deposit you have paid. The receipt should also include full details of your new purchase including the make, model and style of the dress, any accessories and the total price to pay.

2. Don't be caught unawares, find out if there are any additional costs that haven't been included. For example, are fittings and alterations included or are they chargeable as extra. Ask for this to be put in writing when you order the dress.

3. Since you may be ordering your gown well in advance of the wedding day it also makes sense to collect the dress in good time so that you have plenty of time to sort out any problems if they do arise.

4. As a precautionary measure, obtain full details of the owner or proprietor of the bridal business in case problems do arise.

5. When collecting your wedding or bridesmaid dresses don't be afraid to make a point of checking them over thoroughly for any faults before you leave the premises. If the dresses are ready to collect in bags ask for them to be removed from the bags so that you can check them over properly.

6. If possible, pay some of the cost on a credit card as this will give you added protection if something goes wrong or if the shop closes down. The credit provider is equally responsible with the supplier for any breach of contract or misrepresentation if the item costs over £100.

If you have any worries or concerns about bridal wear that you have bought or ordered please contact your local Trading Standards Service.
